Understanding Domain Name Pointing
Domain name pointing allows you to connect your domain to a different service provider than the one where it was originally registered. This process is essential when you purchase a domain from one provider but want to use it with another hosting or website-building platform.
What Is Domain Name Pointing?
Domain name pointing occurs when a domain registered with one service provider is directed to a completely different infrastructure. This enables users to host their website, email, or other services externally while keeping their domain registration separate.
For example, many of our clients register .co.za
domain names with us, but platforms like Wix do not offer .co.za
domains. However, if a client builds a website on Wix, they may want to connect their .co.za
domain to their Wix site. This is where domain name pointing comes in.
Two Methods of Domain Name Pointing
There are two primary ways to point a domain:
1. Name Server Pointing
This method transfers full control of the domain’s DNS (Domain Name System) to the new service provider. Essentially, when you update your domain’s name servers to those of the new provider (e.g., Wix), they take over managing all DNS records, including email, website hosting, and other related services.
2. A Record (IP) Pointing
A lighter alternative is A record pointing, where only the IP address associated with the domain’s web hosting is changed. Instead of transferring full control to the new provider, you simply update the domain’s A record to direct traffic to the new service (e.g., Wix). This keeps other DNS settings, like email hosting, intact.
Conclusion
Domain name pointing is a flexible and effective way to connect your domain to external platforms or services. Whether you opt for name server pointing (full DNS control transfer) or A record pointing (IP address update), understanding these options can help you manage your online presence more efficiently.
If you’re unsure which method is best for your needs, consult your domain registrar or hosting provider for guidance.
